A Professional CV Photo on a White Background — No Studio Needed

How to take a professional CV or LinkedIn photo with your phone, then turn its background clean white for free.

Your photo is the first thing an employer sees, and it forms an impression before a single line is read. The good news: you don't need a studio. A modern phone, window light and a background remover are enough.

Should your CV include a photo?

• Gulf, Arab world and much of Europe: photos are common and often expected.
• US, UK and Canada: usually omitted to avoid hiring bias.
• LinkedIn: essential everywhere — profiles without a photo get ignored more.

The shot: 80% of the result

• Light: face a window in daytime. Soft natural light beats any flash.
• Distance: stand at least a metre from the wall so your shadow doesn't fall on it.
• Backdrop: a single-colour wall makes isolation much easier — even if you'll replace it.
• Framing: mid-chest to the top of the head, with a little space above.
• Camera: at eye level, never from below. Use the phone timer or ask a friend.
• Clothing: a plain colour that differs from the background — white on white disappears.

1. Take several shots and pick the clearest, most natural one.
2. Remove the background and choose white (or a very light grey for a softer look).
3. Crop square or 4:5 as required.
4. Save as JPG at quality 90 — a good size for online application forms.

Mistakes that weaken the impression

• An arm's-length selfie — it distorts features and looks informal.
• Cropping a group or event photo — other people's edges show.
• Heavy beauty filters — you look different from who arrives at the interview.
• A low-resolution image enlarged — it looks blurry inside a PDF.

A photo of your face is personal biometric data. Uploading it to an unknown service means a copy may be stored or used to train models. Processing it in your browser keeps it on your device alone.
